This seems like perfectly standard cabbie conversation to me. For this to seem strange to you means that cabbies generally think you are uptight or stuck up.

BTW, the correct response to this cabbie is, "WTF, of course not!"

Correct response: "Sure why not, it'd beat the pedophiles they're currently using."

Just respond, "It doesn't matter what I think, what matters is what YOU think"

Repeat that after every question he asks until he thinks you are crazy and eventually comps you the ride

You: "Well, yeah, I don't see why not."
Cabbie: "That's what I'm thinking too! What do you think about gay people in the army then?"
You: "Uh, sure."
Cabbie: "I'm feeling we're seeing eye to eye on things! So... How about gay taxi drivers then?"
You: "..."
Cabbie: "I think we'll just have a little stop over at this alley here."

The correct answer is obviously not to answer at all.
