I think it was a bug in the game, because I hit one of those black crane things and it let me shoot again, and I just went into space (literally) for like 10 minutes.

It's not a bug, it's a feature. That's the point. You can accomplish the same effect by hitting one of the colored clouds. They're all over, but there seems to be a strain of them at ~1500 feet. Be careful, though, because the thunderclouds will [censored] up your mojo. Also, there's only so often you can sling your way through the colored clouds. I used one cloud to launch myself into another, and then somehow I got shot violently underground. At one point I was at like -50K in elevation.

I don't think you've seen the same thing we have. I know about the clouds and the cranes, etc. If you hold the spacebar when you are running into one of those crane things, you can get the meter to go off the screen. Usually it will shoot my speed up to 3-6,000 or so but one time I hit ~55,000 MPH and my max height was ~650,000. I'm pretty sure that's not supposed to happen.

No, I've done that, just that when I did it, my power was off the screen the other way and it shot me underground.
