I saw a documentary about the presidency that included interviews with Carter, Ford, and Clinton (I think it was a bonus feature on a "The West Wing" DVD).
Carter and Ford sounded like two of the most intelligent men who ever lived. I was a kid when they were in office, so I don't know anything about them, except for the way they were lampooned by Johnny Carson and Saturday Night Live. I always figured they were bumbling idiots. I mean, I knew they weren't THAT dumb. But hearing them speak for the first time since I grew up really impressed the hell out of me. I say all this, because I guess I have two points: --I wouldn't mind letting Jimmy or Gerry take another swing at it; --I cannot imagine a time when I will say, "Boy, I used to think GW Bush was a bumbling idiot, but he really sounds impressive now!" I guess I owe you a pic for reading all this, so here's Michael, Sonny, and Fredo: ![]() |
