Some general school/study stuff:

Try to enjoy your studies as much as you can and try to take a greater perspective in the classes that are painfully boring or poorly instructed. Trick yourself into getting interested in some of the more boring classes/material.

Try not to skip class too much even if the professors are terrible. And don't bother taking too many notes in classes where you can't write fast enough, just pay attention.

Set up a routine study schedule to stay on track of your classes.

Make friends in your classes and be social when it comes to your studies. Teaching helps you learn, too, even if your classmates aren't up-to-snuff like you.

Consider math and writing labs/tutor halls or whatever if you're having issues with stuff, too.

Also, don't forget about coeds in your non-major classes. Hint: form "study groups/partners."

Yeah. Engineers like beer, women, God, and pining over all the hot unattainable chicks that smarter physics guys are banging.

I don't know nothin' 'bout no math, but I'll tackle this one:

Think of God not as a Person, but as The Way Things Work. You are in school trying to figure that out. You are always studying God when searching for truth. Other than that, try not to do anything you will be embarrassed to recall in twenty years and just be a little nicer to folks than you have to be.

The rest takes care of itself.

Use the resources available to you. As a freshman, it's unlikely that you'll have any trouble at all with the "class" portion of college. Don't waste all day in the gym, as those are a dime a dozen in the real world. Find the labs, and find the classes that give you access to them. I do not know Cornell specifically, but most colleges have equipment on campus that you won't find at Fry's.

Anyhow, I've always hated structured education, but feel that learning is far more important than anything else in the world. My advice is coming from that perspective, and also from the regrets that I still carry with me. I squandered a few years of my life when I could have had some really neat toys to play with and learn from.

So yeah... equipment and friends. That's what I'd try to take advantage of in college. I only did half of that.

Congrats bro! They have a really great engineering program. I went to high school in PA, so I know a lot about their program. I'm currently a junior electrical engineer (BE) and physics (BS) double major at the University of Delaware with a 3.7.

You figure out what kinda engineering you want to go into?

I love multivariable calc. I actually tutor it along with a bunch of other subjects. It's a lot of visualization, and you'll look like a pimp being a first semester freshman nailing out some nice exam scores.

My tip to you for surviving engineering would simply be this:

Time management. Time management. Time management.

Work your sack off during the week, bust your ass from when you get up till when you go to bed. Work ahead, do whatever you have to do. Get hammered on weekends.

That is all .

Anyone here have any advice for a new engineering student?

[/ QUOTE ]

Learn why not just what. You'll forget most of the equations you learn (which is fine, that's what texts are for). But if you want to be a good engineer, start to think why, and how different concepts fit together. You'll do much better on exams and in life.
