Re: 3-base penalty?
[ QUOTE ]
Yes. It's typically called a 'ground-rule triple' although the ball is still officially live. So if the runner has a chance to go all the way home he can go for it. Just like a batter automatically gets first on a walk, but is allowed to try for 2nd if the ball had rolled all the way to the backstop or something. I'm still waiting for the first time I get to see one of these super-rare ground-rule triples. They have occured a few times though. [/ QUOTE ] In 2005 Duaner Sanchez did it while with the Dodgers. The batter hit a high chopper so Dauner threw his glove up in the air to knock it down quicker and then picked it up and threw to 1st. The batter was then awarded 3rd. I think Javier Vazquez also ended up homering this inning too, and it was like in the 7th! I'll try and find this. |

Re: 3-base penalty?
I may be wrong here, but I always thought if a player threw his glove it was 3 bases, but if a catcher used his mask to pick up a ball it was only 1 base.
Can anyone confirm or deny this? |

Re: 3-base penalty?
Clarification:
3 bases for detached equipment touching a FAIR ball. 2 bases for detached equipment touching a THROWN ball. In both cases the contact has to be deliberate. |

[/ QUOTE ] Deny. [/ QUOTE ] Where are you getting the Info though? Thats what I want, anyone could say they deny it, but I want to know where you got the information. Edit: Also, is a catcher picking up a ball with his mask considered "detatched equipment"? He is still holding it. What if a player took his glove off of his hand but was still holding it and was somehow able to catch a fly ball, is the glove considered "Detatched" ? |
