[ QUOTE ] Not American. She is middle class and educated, lives in Mexico. She is somewhat religious. Thats what makes this more unusual. [/ QUOTE ] I'm not going to act like I know Mexicans because I've lived in SoCal for a month and a half, but if you ask me, there's nothing unusual about it now that you have stated that. She probably always regretted not having another kid and this is some weird version of the mid life crisis.

How certain are you that she didn't already know before her daughter 'officially' told her?

in a lot of cultures having a child at that age is not unusual at all.
i used to work with some kids (mostly inner city, dominicans, other latinos, some blacks) who were always shocked that i had a long-term girlfriend and no kids at 23. |

My girlfriend (now wife) gave birth to my little girl (now 6)when I was 17 yrs old. My wife was about 4 months pregnant when we told our parents. We just kept putting it off b/c we were scared to death.
Both of our parents were very supportive throughout the whole ordeal. I don't know what else good parents can do in that situation. My wife and I both went to college and got married at the end of my junior year. Without the help of our parents, I doubt this would have been possible. BTW, everyone in our community was pretty shocked at the time. I was a 4.0 student and never in trouble. Abortion was never really an option for either my wife or I. |

My brother and his wife were 19 and 20, respectively, when she got pregnant. A little bit older, but the reactions of all the parents was the same, "yay baby!!"
When I asked my mom about it, she said "I'm worried about your brother, this will be so hard, but I am so excited to get a grandchild." Perhaps your aunt feels the same way. |
