i read kriegers book, i read cappletti's (sp?) book, i have read the chapter in SS2, and i am now reading Ray Zee's book, but i still feel clueless when i play, i thought o8 was one of the simplest pokergames...

No hi-lo split game is simple. Period.

If you are coming from any form of hi-only poker, you have to learn to calculate pot odds in the face of possibly playing for half the pot, and sometinmes, just a quarter. Implied odds are much harder to estimate in LO8, since you rarely know who is holding which made hands and redraws.

That said, it is very simple to teach someone how to play LO8 like a nit. But playing LO8 like a nit won't make you a winning player in any game except the loosest fishtanks.

Playing like a nit is also not really playing poker.

i could not agree more. there is so much more to consider when playing a split pot game, being that drawing odds change and the dynamics of the game are variance enough. If you feel that you have read the books and fully understand them (and no offense, but i think u may want to re-skim them if your feeling as lost as u say u do), then start low. start at .5/1 on Party and work your way on up the ladder. understand that in low limit O8, ur swings will be large, but if you play a straight foward game while learning (drawing to the nuts basically) yourll beat the game and gain some of ur confidence back. Playing without confidence is almost as bad as playing way under-rolled. So start low, build up, then once u start understand handreading and manipulation of opponents, then move up a level until u beat that game.

This is not an easy game by any means, so just hang in there, and post some hands in here, people have no problem helping.

ok this is one i don't really understand that was posted here: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/sh...2220&page=
its about hand number 1.
and then asnwer: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/sh...Number=6843848

the good play seems to raise, but when i get a hand like this i fold. i understand raise to get a flushdraw out, but villian could have a flush draw too. all i see is a draw to a second-nut low or four miracle 2's to make the nutlow, or a gutshot straight draw, i don't like chasing straights in this game anyway, especially not small ones and gutshots.

Popeye,

At risk to my income, as I play the same games as you,
you are probably playing too weak/tight.

You need to learn more about your opponents at these
levels. OP in that post said villain had limped the
last 4 hands. So if I have seen villain limping every
hand, I don't immediately give villain credit for a
good hand.

You have read Omaha books, but perhaps something
like 'Theory of Poker' would be good for you.

Meanwhile, be comforted by the fact that, I am
thouroughly enjoying your money

Especially focus on semi-bluffing, and do
some searches on it, as the line I suggested
in the other post is a semi-bluff bet.

1) Read Lou Krieger's book.
2) Study the charts in Bill Boston's book
3) Get Rolf's book when it comes out
4) Use PokerTracker/PokerAce
5) Post hand examples.

I moved from NLHE to PLO to PLO8. I beat NLHE over 28k hands. I beat PLO immediately and had a bigger bb/100 than my NLHE, over 10k hands.

I now play 90% O8. The fish are fishier than any other form of poker.

2 Really Important Things:

1. Play to scoop. Way too many morons raise with uncordinated garbage like A29J rainbow. Just because you have A2 doesnt mean you should raise!

2. An O8 nut peddler can secure a decent profit at most levels. A good O8 player can bluff and semi-bluff on every street based on the texture of the board and the nature of their opponents (simple example, a serial A2 raiser pots it preflop. Flop is 9TQ. He checks, you bet he folds)

Anyways best of luck. I hope it all comes together for you
