I second this suggestion; however, you'll be going east, not west into Utah. If you go a few hours farther east you'll be at Lake Powell, which is my favorite vacation spot. Link to LP website (fact section): http://www.lakepowell.com/fun_facts.php

Also home to the world's largest natural land bridge (Rainbow Bridge).

If I remember correctly from when I made the trip, LV to Lake Powell is about 8 hours, including some more scenic, slower (40MPH or so, tops) drives closer to Lake Powell.

Hit the west coast? LA, San Fransisco, Seattle?
Or hit the east coast: Washington, NYC, Boston.
Or rent a car and drive to Baja for a donkey show.

I worked out there for awhile (Hall's Crossing, fairly far north). Trust me, it gets very much not awesome after not very long.
