Re: Anyone travel a long distance in the States by car?
Yeah, the weather is bad right now, it might be worth it to take the southern route, head straight west on the 40 then up the coast on the 5.

Re: Anyone travel a long distance in the States by car?
if you are going taking I-70 through the mountains past denver, i'd suggest you do them during the day. it gets a bit sketchy in points, with all the snow that's been falling, and the windy roads. during the day you'll be fine.
i'd also make sure you have a shovel and some kitty litter in case you get stuck. tire chains are probably adviseable too, but make sure you know how to put them on. they can suck to get on in the snow, with a car with low clearance. |

Re: Anyone travel a long distance in the States by car?
Don't know about weather, but for a 2200 mile trip I like to drive about 1200, take a 15 min nap in the car, and then knock out the last 1000.

Re: Anyone travel a long distance in the States by car?
by yourself? Man, that's tough. My wife and I have driven from OK to Florida twice. With two drivers, no biggie.
As someone else said, go West of Denver on I-70 during the day would be good. You're going over the continental divide. For one person, isn't this almost a wash on gas/lodging/food vs. plane ticket? 2200 miles is at least $200 in gas (around 25 mpg and $2.25 gas). if you throw in another $100 for food and $50 for one cheap motel (assuming you do it with only one motel stop), that's like $350.... just my two cents. |

[/ QUOTE ] According to Googlemaps this will only add 5 hours/500 kilometers. direct 40 - 5 [/ QUOTE ] I would agree with this 100%. Driving through the Rockies in the winter is stupid if you don't have to. Take I-40, detour to the Grand Canyon, and then go up the I-5 (or the PCH). Some of those mountain passes can get several feet of snow with no warning - why take the chance to save 5 hours? |

Re: Anyone travel a long distance in the States by car?
I'd go to cali and then from cali up. You should only have to deal with the chance of bad weather in northern cali and washington. You could do the trip in 2 or 3 days if you rough it up and stick to sleeping in your car and living off rockstar guava and beef jerkey. I wouldn't drink red bull, it will give you stomach aches if you drink too much.
I've done a few trips from arkansas to cali to portland and back before with a friend. One time I woke up to him jacking off while driving. He said it helped him stay awake when he got tired. tip of the day. |
