I love how in the article the refs are not allowed to gamble except on horses in the offseason.

That's what's so ridic. How the hell did that get left in there? Has anyone from the NBA offices ever been to a track, or a bar that provides off-track betting? It's full of a bunch of degens. And you can lose your money just as fast betting the ponies as you can the Big 6 and Big 8.

Stern owns a stud farm. It's rumored that Robert Horry is a creation of his best stud's loin.

Casino gambling not a big deal IMO. The real story remains how this ref potentially changed at least one and possibly more NBA Championship results, and the NBA's utter ineptitude at policing/grading/reviewing their officials, which leaves the question wide open for "who else is doing or has done this".

I think it's the same reason why there was an exception for horce-racing in the UIGEA.

the nba is a form of entertainment. your average sports fan probably doesnt give a flying [censored]. the only people who care are the 1% who listen to sports radio all day and subscribe to news letters.

If this all ends up in the league actually doing something about really crappy calls in NBA games and/or the ability for refs to over-rule each other more easily on the floor then it could MAAAAYBE be better for the long-term health of the league.

The league knows they have to win back the faith of the fans after something like this.
Perhaps a 2 out of 3 type system on foul-calls instead of "hey, whoever blows the whistle first gets to decide" will get the job done.

Obviously we don't want to drag the games out forever. But football officials conference after every single flag so if some other ref saw that there really wasn't contact or the ball wasn't catchable or whatever then they can pick-up the flag and say they changed their mind and it isn't a big deal.

For the NBA they would need to act more quickly after each situation. But they need to get it to a point where it doesn't look as much like one ref is really showing up somebody else if they change a call.

If an over-the-back call is made, but another ref can clearly see that there probably was no contact or that he got the ball cleanly then he should be better able to over-rule that call. As it is now i don't think this type of stuff happens nearly enough.
It's more like, "I don't think that call was right...but I'm not going to show up my own guy."

The NBA died when the goal was to get into Sportscenter highlights. This is just the kill switch now that we know it was rigged too.

It won't end it. There are enough morons to gobble up the bad product.

Discalimer: Eric Gagme just blew another Sox game and I hate what the NBA is doing to my beloved game of basketball, so I'm taking it all out on you guys.

MicroBob,

If a call is made for a foul, and then overturned, what the [censored] do you do? Inbound from the sideline?

Edit: A better system would be for a ref to raise his hand if he thinks there's a foul, and a second ref would blow the whistle if he agrees.
