I don't get why you say outdoor rink. Whats the difference if we have access to an indoor rink?

outdoor rink = [theoretically] a colder state = [theoretically] more exposure to winter sports / ice-skating

i.e. I grew up on SoCal but can still ice-skate... I bet I'm in the minority out here.

Also, outdoor rinks are cheap or free, whereas ice time at an indoor rink is not, this could have an effect on how often you'd get to go skating.

Grew up in BC, no outdoor rinks where I live but a couple indoor rinks and lots of hockey action. I played hockey when I was young and can still skate very well

grew up in Chicago, played hockey until I was about 15 and I look to get back into it in the future. I'm a good skater, but I'd estimate I am in the 25% minority that can skate decently.

I would assume if the ponds freeze and people play pond hockey where you're from, that qualifies as "outdoor rinks". That's how I voted anyway.

Grew up on a lake...

OP - what percentage did you think could/could not skate?

[/ QUOTE ]

My friend argues that for those that grew up in colder states, the majority can skate (60% or more). I thought that it would be a smaller number, somewhere around 1/3.

For the warmer states, we were both thinking a much smaller percent, around 5%. I only asked out of curiosity.

When I say outdoor "rink," I mean any ice surface you can skate on, ponds, whatever. Anyplace where there's natural, skatable ice counts.

I grew up in a small city in Ontario. Every park in town had at least one city maintained outdoor rink, plus 5 indoor rinks.

I cannot skate without falling down, and can't stop without the boards
