Re: A Poker Players\' Solution To The Middle East Conflict ?
[ QUOTE ]
Israel has an unlimited bankroll by virtue of superior military hardware and tactics and the backing of even bigger rolled friends. Thus they can call any allin bet by an opponent with equanimity and can never be bluffed out. Also they will not allow the short stacks to continuously steall all the small pots and build their stacks to a level where they could take a large bite out their own stack. Barring repeatedly playing extremely bad, or their opponents having backers who will back them with unlimited funds as was possible during the Cold War, they have a guaranteed long term win. Their opponents should recognize that and quit the game. [/ QUOTE ] The Arabs are the ones with the unlimited bankroll because they can can repeatedly lose all-in bets (wars) and never have their existence jeaporadized. If Israel loses once, they are eliminated from the tournament so to speak. |

Whoever invented the metaphor must really be kicking himself right about now.

Fly,
Your argument only takes into account the financial aspect of being able to rebuy, and discounts the possibility of nuclear weapons ever being used which could in fact totally eliminate them. |

iron, #3 is the only relevant point. Which is why Israel will pull a Deringer from its sleave to prevent its opponent from buying more chips/cash to add to its stack. [/ QUOTE ] #1 would be relevant if it came to pass, which is admittedly unlikely. Why wouldn't #2 be relevant? If Arabs gain control of the Israeli government, the Jews are busto. They wouldn't even be able to use the nukes, because nuking the Israeli Arabs would result in a split pot. |

iron,
According to wiki: "According to Israel's Central Bureau of Statistics, as of May 2006, of Israel's 7 million people, 77% were Jews, 18.5% Arabs, and 4.3% 'others'." It's going to be a long time befire 18.5% can get to 51% regardless of faster birthrates. |

Israeli Arab population reaches a point where they elect enough members to the Knesset to soften the Israeli stance. B. Israel agrees to the Arab demands and evacuates the West Bank and East Jerusalem C. Arabs agree to Israeli demands, freezing in place PA controlled territory in the West Bank and permitting the unfettered expansion of Israeli settlements and discontinues terror attacks. Personally, I think A. is likely to occur first, even if it takes 100 years. |

Meh, there's only one solution and it won't happen for another 200 years--interbreeding

THE TWO SIDES [/ QUOTE ] I think this is a flaw with the game Cyrus. Although conceivably every player could be put on one side or the other, a win for one may not be considered a win for all. In purely poker terms let Isreal crush it's weaker opponents. But what happens when the heavyweights bring their chips to the table? They are hardly likely to pass up a table as good as this - weak opponents, a lot of spoils. |

In purely poker terms let Israel crush its weaker opponents. [/ QUOTE ] That's the obvious poker solution, yes. But I'm trying for anything beyond that, if it can exist. The assumption is that participants will use their skills, knowledge, intelligence and their humaneness (still talking abt poker players...) to come up with something beyond the pure application of force. This is why the title of the thread is asking not for a "poker solution" but for a "poker players' solution". |
