I think going to see a movie is a terrible thing to do on a first date.

Couldn't agree more...how can you possibly get to know someone when you're spending 2 hours in total silence? Pick something where you're interacting more.

I was wondering why it took so long for someone to say "movies suck as first dates." I imagined it was because this is a semi-gimmick thread, but couldn't be sure.

"Hey, I just met you. Do you want to spend two hours sitting near each other without actually communicating or looking at one another? Awesome."

Does it really matter what the movie is?

I'd agree w/ FFK. The first movie I saw w/ my boyfriend was after we had been dating a while and it was America: Freedom to Fascism. (Great movie, btw ) Seriously, I would recommend picking something that you are already interested in seeing. That way she's not expecting you to watch chick flicks all the time w/ her.

Edit: Other date Ideas.

See something bright and fun, and often a little sentimentality to it helps. Anything weird around you gets ascribed to you, on a first date. Vice-versa with the bright and fun stuff.

The movie typed I just mapped out, by the way, is a good animated movie or if she has the same taste as you, a comedy. But comedy is death if your tastes differ, and chicks are often afraid to be stupid on first dates and can be a little uptight. So something like "Jackass" is a gamble.
