well he is just telling who is ahead the most, which is not uncommon in cash-games. when i play with my friends, we also look who won (and who lost) the most in the end. its pretty obvious this is even more interesting for the viewers in a televised event.

Its a hybrid format.
There are like 2 "semi-finals" where 6 online qualifacants play for 2 spots and than get stacked into the "final" cashgame which is like 50k min Buyin if I remember correctly.
Also the 3rd finisher or something goes into a lucky loser round or the finish pendant propably somekind of sauna.
