That's very common. But the betting line is typically the FRONT of the cards, not the back. You are (normally) allowed to count out directly to the side of your cards. This allows you to keep the cards reasonably close to the rail and close to your stack so they are protected, while giving you a couple inches in front of your normal stack to count.

Thanks for the replies, lesson learned. I'll be cognizant of where my hole cards are from now on.

I still say I was cutting them out sideways and it was a pretty lame angle as it was obvious I intended to raise. No biggie.
