[ QUOTE ] [Hey Joe], how do you get 20 guys on base and score 4? - Your Mom, 2+2 forum [/ QUOTE ] Getting a bunch of people on base is'nt whats goingto win you ballgames. That's the thing. So many of the young peopel today coming from Harvard and things are misunderstanding hitting. Getting on base isn't enough you have to know what to do when you are on base like such as messing up the timing of the pitcher and stealing bases and sacrificing and breaking up double plays like we used to play in the 70s. What happened was people read Billy Bean's book Moneyball and misunderstood these new stats like on-base percentate and this OPS stuff, which doesn't win you ballgames. Playing the game the right way and hustling does. Getting on base is great but you ca'nt clog the basepaths and win and be consistent. Gary Sheffield. - Joe Mor(g)an. [/ QUOTE ] A+ |

[Hey Joe,] You forgot to mention you haven't seen any of these teams that are getting on base actually play a game this year. - Slothinator, Rock Bottom [/ QUOTE ] That is true, I did not see the game yesterday between Chicago and the Pirates...or...I mean. The question was, and I'm not sure if this word means what Im about to say but Abstract. Taken out of context (I think thats what it means), the question can still be answered even by myself. Maybe if the Cubs had one more African-American player, such as a Gary Sheffield type who gets on base a lot and hits for power, they might have won last night. But just relying on the OPS stat that Billy Bean invented in the first chapter of that blasphemic conglomeration of pages called Moneyball...if those words mean what I think they mean...doesnt win you ballgames you need a Sheffield type who gets on base and hits for power. Consistently. See you all future stars in Coppertown some day. - Joe OK, I need to stop emulating FJM. I just find it fun to try to answer something in a manner that JM would.
