And c'mon, Italian and Irish jokes are not the same as this.... they just aren't. Maybe 50 years ago it would have been the same, but I have never in my life met someone who racist against Italians or Irish. I have met people who are racist against Asians.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well maybe through 50 more years of hard work, we can end racism against Asians and do bow impressions and make slinty eyes without fear of reprimand.

btw guys, i am usually incredibly easy going, but i was pretty offended with it. i don't really know why

[/ QUOTE ]

maybe it's because you really couldn't do anything about it? Like, you have a valid point, but if you were to say anything about it, you'd get a "why are you making a big deal about this" kind of response...

I guess we see you're incredibly easygoing because you waited like 20 seconds, you said, for them to realize they were blocking you? I don't think I normally have the patience for that. I'm like, one, two, BEEP...

i dunno, GoT, sort of like if i'm driving and someone gives me the finger.. it's meant to insult me i guess right? but why would i get upset? i usually just laugh at it.

[/ QUOTE ]
Yeah, I'd do the same thing with the finger. I don't know, I mean I know my reaction to racism is at least sometimes not very logical or consistent with my reaction to other forms of insults.. I guess I've never really bothered to try and figure out what the difference is. Maybe now I will!

I mean, I've had strangers call me an idiot or [censored], and for the most part it doesn't bother me too much. It does to some extent, but I get kind of embarrassed than anything else I guess. But I react differently when someone puts their fingers up to their eyes and does the slanty thing. That one I guess gives me a mix of angsty plus kind of sad and dumbfounded, just 'cause it's so childish I guess.

One time I was driving thru California and stopped for dinner at this little burger joint in some NorCal town. It was the type of place that made your burgers to order, but still kind of had a pre-cooked assembly line feel where they had the most popular standard burgers ready to just grab and put on your tray. So I'm standing in line and looking up at their board and finally decide on some deluxe'ish burger with some gimmicky name like "The Everything Burger" or something, except I decide I don't want the pickle or "burger sauce". So I get up to the counter and tell the lady my order and specify "no pickle or burger sauce." I fork over some cash, she thumbs out my change, and I watch as she grabs my fries and a burger from the pre-made stack. They get put on a tray and she turns her attention to the person behind me as they order.

Of course I'm a bit skeptical since I watched all this, so I kind of stand there off to the side with my tray still on the counter as i unwrap my burger and check to see if it indeed has pickle and what I presume is some orange'ish tangy-looking sauce on it and, of course, it does. So I wait till the guy finishes ordering and she's done gathering all his food and then grab her attention and kindly asked if I could get An Everything Burger without either of these things. The lady looks at me as I grab her attention, then once she realizes what I'm asking she kind of sighs and rolls her eyes and I hear her mutter under her breath "chink."

Long story short, I'm hugely taken aback, ask to speak to her manager, she tells me she is the manager, my voice level rises as I can't seem to find any sentence to say other than "Are you joking me???" She ends up telling me she's not gonna give me my burger and that she wants me to leave the restaurant, and I guess I'm just in the right state of mind where I'm logical and composed enough to know that she fully has the right to do this, but am pissed off and angry enough that I decide I'm not going anywhere and am gonna stay in her face about this until I feel good and ready to leave. And all this is during peak dinner hours so the place is far from empty and there's a line behind me as I'm now borderline yelling.

Anyway, after I don't leave she calls the cops and I stay until they come and escort me out to the parking lot where they let me blow off some steam to them before I leave and decide to go find somewhere to sit down and have dinner so I can calm myself down.

Fwiw, I am confident that if one of his (white) friends had made the same joke to CDC, he would not be offended in the least. I love racist humour.... just not from random strangers who are doing it to offend you.

This is what alot of people are overlooking here.... the racial part of it is not in itself offensive, it's the spirit in which it was done. To me, the incident is less comparable to someone calling him a "fkkn chink," eg, than it is to someone on the sidewalk walking by and knocking off his baseball cap, and then laughing with his friends about it.

The girl was just being a punk.

I don't think it's very much of a secret that in America, white/black discrimination is the biggest deal in terms of public perception and history. I'm sure we could find numerous types of discrimination that go on worldwide that, without the appropriate cultural context, wouldn't make a goddamn lick of sense. (EDIT: In other words, depending on where you are, not all flavors of racism are going to provoke the same reaction.)

but that doesnt matter at all to the person it is directed towards...

would (or should) it matter if GoT was black and the words were changed?

how have the historical differences in discrimination facing blacks and asians really affected the 20 yos of today?

i dunno, but imo, racism is racism. it sucks regardless.
