Being a winning poker player is being able to learn from mistakes, but also to accept that we do make mistakes and that we can move on.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, I used to tell myself "don't move up until you stop making these dumb mistakes" , but if you look at someone like sbrugby, he still has sessions that are just awful. It's human nature, you can't totally eliminate those times when you just play bad. You have to just raise your level of overall play and get better at recognizing and controlling your bad phases.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is a very good point.

Too often I tell myself "Self, you're not ready to move up because you made xxx bad plays today. You can move up when you stop completely." Well, I'm not going to stop completely. Never.

I can, however, make fewer and less costly mistakes than my opponents. If I'm doing that, I'll win. If I do it consistently enough at one level, I'm likely ready to move up to the next.

I think SSNL undervalues balancing your hand ranges in general, except as a justification for when somebody wants to play a nutso bluff.

[/ QUOTE ]

Mmmm I think it's pretty much wrong almost always at SSNL still.

[/ QUOTE ]

I used to think the same, until one day I was playing somewhat laggy and a little wild postflop at a $100 table for fun. I ended up stacking a tagfish on a 279 rainbow board with my AA vs his 55. He commented after the hand: "Figured he had trash like usual.." Was pretty much an epiphany for me. Even the fish at $100 pay attention to what/how you're playing. My win rate has significantly gone up since realizing this.

[/ QUOTE ]

WTF does this have to do with balancing? You have the nuts.

Balancing is when you stack him with A9.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah I was gonna say that but figured I'd let someone else.

[/ QUOTE ]

It was the hands leading up to that one. I thought this was obvious. Incidentally, A9 or AA makes no difference. They play just about identically ( only difference being opponent may have 4 more outs when behind, compared to AA, sometimes.. ) on that dry of a board when you know your opponents view you as out of line. He wasn't slowplaying TT+ preflop.

[/ QUOTE ]

My point is that you don't need any history for AA to be like the nuts here. This has nothing to do with merging.

a) people play way more than just sets and 97 here strong
b) people don't ever [censored] fold
d) there are a freaking TON of people who never 3-bet TT or JJ preflop, but play it strongly when they flop an overpair.

Perhaps A9 was a bad choice, because I really meant "a nine" as in "a hand with a 9 in it".

When villain thinks your line is "nuts or air" and calls with 55, it's because AA is definately in the "nuts" category, and thinks it's a tiny part of your range. You'd never play, for example, J9 or T9 this way (he thinks).

So merging on this board would be if you stacked him with J9 or T9. Playing AA like it's the nuts, when it pretty much is, isn't merging.
