The drugs dont work- The verve (also covered by Ben Harper on Live from Mars).

All this talk of getting old
It's getting me down my love
Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown
This time I'm comin' down

Its either about the artists own drug struggles, or written from the point of view of a terminally ill relative. Either way, it sucks the life out of me everytime I hear it, but in a good, soul serching way...

if you knew anything about the writer, it's probably a personal point of view - Ashcroft was a major substance abuser of the highest caliber - it's almost like a requirement to be a rock star in England.

Well if you knew anything about the song, you'd know it was about the illness and death of Richard Ashcroft's father.

Marie is unlike any other song, and is one of the most powerful songs you can imagine. I'll bet Whiskey would agree that a bit more conventional but similarly sad song is Townes's Tecumseh Valley.

There was another thread recently which asked for songs where a live version owned the studio version. Someone said, "anything by Townes Van Zandt." That's true too.

Townes Van Zandt is the best songwriter in the whole world and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that. - Steve Earle.

Leaving on a Jet Plane, the Chantal Kreviezak (sp?) version. Man that song chokes me up since it rose to popularity right about the time I left my hometown.

Mr Feeney

Nice post, Tecumseh Valley had tears in my eyes literally the first time I heard it. Marie was entirely different, I was just frozen by that song. I also find something incredibly melancholy about "Pancho and Lefty"

I still can't [censored] believe I actually listened to this over and over after my exgirlfriend cheated on me (this was years ago, thank god).

I was going to add "Marie" but I see John Feeney beat me too it.
Townes was once asked why his music was so sad, he responded, "there are two kinds of music Zip-a-dee-do-da and the blues"
To that I add:

"Waiting around to die"

Sometimes I don't even know where this dusty road is taking me
Sometimes I don't even know the reason why
But I figure I'll keep on ramblin'
Lots of booze and lots of gamblin'
It's easier than just waitin around to die.

Once I had a Ma, I even had a Pa
He hit her with a belt once 'cause she cried
She told him to take care of me
Headed back to Tennessee
It was easier 'n just waitin around to die.

I came of age and I met a girl
in a Tuscaloosa bar
She cleaned me out and hid it on the sly
I tried to kill the pain
I bought some wine and hopped a train
It was easier than just waiting around to die

My friend said he knew where some easy money was
We robbed a man and brother did we fly
The police caught up with me
drug me back to muskogee
Now it's two long years of waitng around to die.

Now I'm out of prison
I got me a friend at last
He don't drink, or cheat, or steal, or lie
His name's codeine
he's the finest thing I've seen
and together we're gonna wait around to die.
