Okay I realize I am a mile later to the party but I watching Phil Gordon explain one of the traits of a fish is looking at a hand as soon as they get it. Can someone explain is so bad about that?

The only thing you can accomplish by looking at your hand before your turn is to give out information to your opponents. In a home game or at low levels with unobservant players, you can look before your turn if you feel more comfortable. But at large tournaments it can only hurt you.

Looking at the cards immediately is not a sure-fire indication of a fish. A lot of great players do it. But fish are more likely to do this.
