Re: OT: [censored] thread, August, READ RULES IN TOP POST
The news articles, or at least CNN's, say that there were reports of "several fatigue problems" and that the bridge was rated "structurally deficient." Sounds like it could've been prevented, but whatever... no use crying over spilt milk.

Meh, reading that pisses me off though. I mean wtf, a bridge 100 feet over a river is reported as having "several fatigue problems" and being "structurally deficient" and they still allow traffic on it? Seems really f'd up to me, I mean ok if this is a cattle crossing or something, yeah ignore it. But a bridge that people actually drive over? Come on.
It's also scary because there's no telling how many bridges just like this everywhere. |

[/ QUOTE ] Right, and if that is the case then it becomes a bigger deal since whoever is in charge of inspections and determining if a bridge is structurally sound to be used is likely to be in charge of more than that one bridge. With most large accidents a lot comes down to missed or ignored warning signs. If you've ever watched "Seconds from Disaster" on the NGC, in almost every situation there is some red flag that gets overlooked that eventually leads to the disaster. I just don't understand how things involving the safety of people isn't taken seriously enough to prevent incidents like this from happening. Edit: didn't see the reply from Wiggs until after I wrote mine. |

[/ QUOTE ] I've seen reports (like 60 Minutes style) and read stuff in the local papers in Mass/NH and I believe a huge number of our bridges have some degree of structural problems that we are not addressing quickly enough. It's just like the New Orleans situation which we all knew was a disaster waiting to happen. |
