If you're a big fan of combinatorics, check out a book called 'My Mind is Open' about Paul Erdos. My favorite clip about combinatorics is how Erdos described the difficulty party problem (what size of a party do you have to have to ensure that there are a set of people of X size that all know each other or all don't know each other) when X = 5 (2 is trivial, 3 and 4 are known).

Paraphrased....

"Imagine that an alien race has come to Earth and demanded the solution to the party problem for 5 people. They threaten to destroy the planet if we would not give it to them. If all of the greatest minds and computers on the planet were applied to solving this problem, we could do it. If they ask for 6, we should research weapons."

Here's the equation that ended my master's degree studies:



Basically I had to solve the right hand side of the equation, reduce it, collect like terms and try to find values of Aqprl from the left side.

After a couple hundred pages of hand written calculations I said [censored] it and stopped paying my tuition.
