Used to say Trates. Maybe that's also right but I have been convinced trays is more correct.

I've met many people who can't seem to pronounce "Massachusetts". I think they're being lazy. It's not that hard.

[/ QUOTE ]

for the longest time I've pronounced it "Taxachusetts". Woops.

[/ QUOTE ]

It's "Mass-o-two-sh!ts" after a few winters there. But not during Red Sox season.

sundry - would pronounce it in my head as sun-dreye; didn't know it should've been sundree
cache - I pronounce it as "cashay" although I hear people pronounce it as "cash"
minutae - "minoosha" I would pronounce it as "min-you-tay"

[ QUOTE ]
Today in a business meeting someone used the word hyperbole in describing some situation. Except that he pronounced it "hyper-bowl."

When I was a kid, every time I read the word "awry" I pronounced it "aw-ree" in my head. Luckily, I never had occassion to actually use that word. One day while reading, for some random reason, my brain decided to pronounce it "a-rye" and a lightbulb went off in my head and I knew before going to the dictionary that that was how you pronounce it.

Your turn.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is excellent. For the longest time, whenever I saw the word "barfly," I just could not figure out what the hell it was supposed to mean, because it was in my head as a damned adverb ("--ee").

Then I became one, so I naturally learned how to pronounce it.
