I don't think he's in the same level as Ronaldo, maybe better than Rooney, it depends, Rooney is having a poor year,he's much better than what he's showing right now.

Even though I am a Ronaldo basher, he is much better than messi mostly for the reason RJ listed.

While that may be, there is a strong chance that Messi ends up either like Saviola or guys like Michael Owen and Raul.

I was thinking of making a thread just about this, but there are loads of guys who are ridiculously good as 18-20 year olds and get a lot of attention, but don't work out to anywhere near their potential. These guys always have a lot of pace, good ball skills, and have scored a few excellent, flashy goals. They are inconsistent, but that's ok because they're only 20 or whatever so it's not unexpected. The problem is that they basically never develop consistency and for whatever reason (injuries, transfers, coaching issues) they see a decline in their skills, most often they slow down, and they go from being a huge player to just a bit player. I could easily see Messi going this way. As sad as it is for me to admit, I think Jose Antonio Reyes is this way. That's probably fine because maybe Sevilla will get him back before too long when he still has something to offer.

1 great season doesn't make him the best player in the world

[/ QUOTE ]

Maybe, maybe not. Best player in the world is pretty subjective...and how you judge it varies...current form, or past performance, etc.

The important point is that Ronaldo's contract is more valuable than anyone else's in football. And I don't see how you could dispute that.

Currently? Or will be? Also, why do you think this?

Jared, these guys are tantalizers. Didn't you read Simmons piece on this?

It has to be based on one of these things:
Confidence
Coaching
Fitness

Injuries can derail a career as quickly and harshly as losing confidence. They have to have these two skills to succeed. If they do then I think any real skill can be coached, and there would lie the coach. They have to have a good coach, consistently.

I also think that a good coach can have a big impact on the other two items.
