I've actually had good success with a hug as a greeting. It has to be done with care though. Your goal is friendly, confident and optimistic (which should be your attitude throughout the whole date).

I try to make dates at bars or restaurants where alcohol can easily be obtained. It's incredible how much booze can smooth over awkwardness in these things. Also, not to be crass, but your chances of sexual escapades increase dramatically.
