Fresh (1994) is awesome. It's a story of a chess-playing kid in the hood who outsmarts a bunch of gangsters. One of the better endings I've ever seen in a movie.

In the same vein as Dazed and Confused, there's a movie called The Stoned Age that is pretty entertaining. Very weird and funny.

Over the Edge with a young Matt Dillon about a bunch of suburban kids gone wild.

And a movie called Suburbia (1984) that is pretty entertaining.

Pootietang is a must see if you haven't. And I don't know if Hollywood Shuffle or I'm Gonna Git You Sucka count, but they're both awesome.

Also Kentucky Fried Movie and Amazon Women on the Moon are a couple early Airplane style funny movies.

Not sure if So I Married an Axe Murderer counts, but it's pretty damn funny.

And I second City of Lost Children as an amazing flick.

Don't think The Motorcycle Diaries has been said. It's about a young Che Guevara riding around South America with a friend. Excellent movie.

I liked Pi an awful awful lot.

I'm guessing if I saw it again today I wouldn't be quite so keen on it because it does get a little silly in parts.
But it's still definitely worth watching.
Soundtrack and doing it all in black-and-white both work extremely well for that film.

haha I always mention this movie in threads like this - I <3 norm macdonald even though just about everything else he's ever done was terrible.

I also always mention Koyaanisqatsi - a wordless, plotless film featuring a Philip Glass soundtrack - obviously on the pretentious side but has some unforgettable images.

and will second PokerFink's recommendation of Rope, which is awesome - I was surprised I'd never heard of it.

i would assume he'd change the writing and the acting.

I was referring to the writing only and I still think the question is valid. How was it poorly written?
