And if you are looking for a little bit of history from the left, check out A Peoples History of the United States by Zinn. [/ QUOTE ] I looked at the reviews on Amazon and I'm pretty sure the left-biased would tilt me. Orange also suggested Guns, Germs, and Steel though so I will investigate this. |

Re: ***SSNL LIFE THREAD***
Huge beat: I arrived at my job 1 week too late to get in on the current 6-month period for the employee stock program, where we get to buy stock at a 15% discount and, as best as I can tell, we're locked into a 15% profit at worst because to get the price we pay for the shares, you take the lower of the stock prices at the start and end of the 6 month period.
So of course, in the 5 weeks since I started, company stock is up 9%. God damn it. |

Re: ***SSNL LIFE THREAD***
Also Jay, don't know if you are into this side of history, but Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling was a pretty amazing book. Basically chronicles how the ceiling came about, as well all the politics that shaped Rome and the Vatican at the time. Here is a link to it on Amazon
Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling I was never really interested in going to see the chapel, but after reading this book it has been near the top of my list for places to go to. |

Re: ***SSNL LIFE THREAD***
What are people's thoughts on the BOWFLEX for working out?
I don't have a gym within close proximity and I need to get in shape. Currently I don't own anything other than 2 12 lb dumbbells :/ So basically my current workout routine is: Run when i'm stuck or angry Sexytime/masturbat Pushups whenever Any other ideas besides the BOWFLEX are appreciated. |

[ QUOTE ] Band of Brothers! Oh wait, you said book... [/ QUOTE ] Yah, but Band of Brothers is pretty awesome too. [/ QUOTE ] Band of Brothers = a book by Steven Ambrose. Gtr = history so I can help out Jay, send me a pm or whatever. "Fun" history reading for me is narrative history which if written well, comes off like a novel. first on the list would be the 3 book series by Cornelius Ryan. In order, the longest day, a bridge too far, and the last battle, based on thousands of interviews, good stuff. I enjoyed Max Hastings stuff mostly /WWII, but he wrote a very interesting book on the falklands war and another great british historian is Martin Middlebrook who is known as a prolific WWI historian but also wrote one of the finest historical accounts of the battle of arnhem titled Arnhem, lol. The best although very focussed book on the falklands is a book by a TA Para Regt officer titled "Not mentioned in Dispatches" also a very good read which takes to task the "legend" of VC winner H Jones during the battle of Goose Green in that war. 7 battles to stanley another good falklands book. I like McPherson on the Civil war, for overview, but the best writing is imo in the biographical realm on southern generals like JEB Stuart, Longstreet and Jackson. Interesting stuff. My best advise beyond my ranting would be in the WW2 era. I find that most interesting, along with what is available on Northern Ireland during recent times (past 35 years). So pm me etc if you want more. |

Re: ***SSNL LIFE THREAD***
Girlfriend`s mom is starting to piss me off.
At 11pm I`m playing bioshock, she tells me to go to sleep or she`ll unplug my laptop. Then she tells me to take a shower before sleep. At 10 am she wakes me up to eat food. She tells me before I eat food I have to take a shower. She won`t let me drink coke at the table. There was a bunch of flowers on the table, she asked me to name them all in english. I only got about half "rose, sunflower, carnation, etc." then she asked why I don`t know things that normal people know. wtf. She`s also heavily into a cultist religion, she leaves for long periods at a time without saying anything. She tries to get me to come to these strange cultist meetings, and tries to make me watch these religious dvds. |
