i cant see a deal like that happening SU. perhaps if the red sox threw in lester or something.

this might be giving up too much, though i am a huge fan of laroche. i guess the reality is that pena will never play full-time in boston, so giving up a slight edge by dealing him and a semi-prospect in lester is worth getting the best 3rd baseman they have.

lol collettiaments

i agree with the deal (in a vacuum) being in the LAD favor. in the real world it cant be -EV for boston as its clear he wont be playing here unless two outfielders die on the same day.

Really? Pena and Lester for a guy with those projected numbers? Hell, that looks like a steal for the Sox.

pena is basically a lost cause. if you can find a team that values him, you've gotta make something work. as much as i like lester, he's still a project and may never develop past being a 5th starter type and middle reliever. i think you need to pull the trigger on one of the top 25 prospects in baseball (something i dont think lester ever even was, even before cancer while dominating aa)

everyone in this thread really hates wily mo pena, when in reality, he's actually got a ton of power and has serious potential. the fact that he will never get a full time job in boston does not make him expendable, a fact that you will soon realize when he is traded.

i would love to see pena stick around boston just so i don't have to listen to guys like toro bitch and moan about theo dealing him for peanuts and him hitting 40 HR two years from now.

can anyone come up with a handfull of players that were valuable pieces to their team that struck out >30% of their ab's and walked <10%? WMP would be cool to keep around for pre-game batting practice displays, but he's not good enough to play everyday for a contender.

maybe if his defense had any value whatsoever i could understand waiting out his "potential", but theres really no need for it.

in 83 games last year WMP was .300/.350/.490

Adam Dunn was .230/.365/.490 and is a very valuable player this year. he's also a couple years older than wmp.

edit: this year Dunn is .263/.365/.554. if wmp could come reasonable close to that, he's a valuable guy to have around.

He had a great 2006, and it would be really stupid to just give up on a 25 yo with that much potential just based on 130 ABs.

andres galarraga was the first name that came to mind - dunno if he quite fits your description. as i look, preston wilson too I suppose.

it's a fairly new phenomenon for players to strike out that much.
