Dude, we've all got a half read paperback copy lying around the house somewhere. Do I need to finish the book or can I just skip it jump right into pretentious know it all right now?

The khanates weren't seperate until Kublai died. He was still in control.

My mistake. They were still formally unified, but the split that would happen after Kublai's death was already largely a de facto reality. It still seems absurd that troops would be sent from China to rampage around Europe.

You can quibble about specifics. But something about the Mongol Empire needs to be in the list.
