Well, in show it would be damn hard to NOT gain weight living his lifestyle with Carm and Artie's cooking, so regardless of if it's intentional, it makes total sense.

Howard asked Stevie this. Stevie said, "We've ALL put on some weight since then." He says Gandolfini has already started to lose weight since the Sopranos wrapped.

They showed him in the crowd of a Nets game a few weeks ago. He looked a lot thinner.

If you can watch the Gandolfini interview on Inside the Actors Guild with James Lipton.

Gandfolini explains that he puts weight on for the charachter. The weight helps him with his "stage presence".
