Re: Weather Channel Founder says\"Global Warming is Biggest Scam in His
[ QUOTE ]
Integrated circuits (developed by NASA) are far more advanced than vacuum tube dealees [/ QUOTE ] yeah good point. and I think it is important to see that once a vacuum tube computer got going, it was only a matter of time until IC circuits and stuff, there was kinda a technology track. gov speeded the timeline up byh throwing money at it. I'm saying solar nanotech, from what I've read, is very similiar in that it is in it's infancy, but the tech track is there and there's no doubt that it will get done, just when. so if the gov wants to throw money it might be able to speed up the timeline, *if gov feels it is important to do so*, like if man made global warming were real. |

[/ QUOTE ] Just to point out a few things about the semiconducter. First of all it's silly IMO to believe that if we had no government research we wouldn't have the semiconducter. Second of all computer technology advances were brought about by the private sector. Third of all we don't know that government resources were allocated in the most effecient manner in developing this technology. It may not have even been close to the most effecient allocation of resources. In fact it's possible that resources were allocated so poorly that the private sector would have come up with this technology far sooner. Don't know, probably not, but a possibility. |

There seems to me to be an implicit assumption that efficiency is very important. Clearly it is important, but only one of many factors that is used to take the measure of society. Even if government funded research is less efficient somehow, that isn't necessarily the be all and end all of the situation.

And profit organizations tend to prefer applied research. It gets too easy to say that 'the market would see the need for basic research' when little supports that notion. Esp. when you consider things such as patents and copyright it can get horrible. Basic research have often set the total gain of many over the incredible gain of few by releasing valuable research material and that rocks. On the other side of the coin - my field is plagued with financially based research where we don't get to see the material for peer review unless we pay for a license and it sucks and can stop academic progress in the field. |

[/ QUOTE ] the whole point is that if carbon is man making global warming then we need a solution *right now*, damn the costs, to save the earth! that's the socialist argujment anyway about why we're gonna hjave to pay more taxes and lower our standard of living. I'm just flipping it and saying if costs are not an issue , then why aren't we trying to solve the problem? |

How often is it necessary to allocate resources ineffeciently to acheive suitable levels of education, health, lack of violence, freedom, and/or cultrual acheivments. Could you give me an example? |

I'm not sure what sort of example you want (practical or theoretical), but I would support subsidizing education, subsidizing public health, subsidizing the poor, etc |

If that's the case I would think that you could provide some reasoning behind that. Give me a hypothetical. |
