I've noticed that when I buy a pair of dress shoes they are laced differently. Is there a proper "etiquette" on lacing up dress shoes vs. regular shoes? The way they are laced is more difficult to loosen/take on/off which seems to make no sense...

In good old paint tradition i will explain this difficult issue:

The left piece of art shows how it is usually done. It is a simple and effective way to lace your shoes.
The right masterwork shows a less practical way to do so, but which is often times seen as more elegant with a cleaner look. And thats the reason why shops use this lacing technique frequently: It looks better with most dress shoes.

It looks better for display, but it's not just less practical for wear, it's completely impractical. Criss-cross is the winning play for when you're actually wearing your shoes, and not just staring at them.

I don't get this shoe thing at all. Here's my shoe collection:

Except mine are much dirtier and broken in many places.

The only reason I'm posting this is because the bottom pair of shoes is the "slip on" version of converse all stars. They have no laces. Instead, the tongue is just sewn to the rest of the shoe so they're basically just loafers that look like converse all stars. I really suggest them to anyone who has my (lack of) taste in shoes. They're really comfortable and convenient and IMHO they look better than other all stars.

Got mine at Gap because they weren't in the Footlocker near me.

Noah,

Varvatos originally designed a slip-on for Converse, Converse now sells slip-ons without the Varvatos markup.

lol I have these, but there are big holes in them and now I basically can't wear them anymore. I think it's because I sometimes run up stairs fast or something...

A ton of shoe lacing methods at:

I use straight (European) for most of my dress shoes. Just looks neater. My sneakers are all criss-cross.
