A bank cannot charge a fee for cashing a check drawn on their instituion. That was the law when I worked in the industry for 10 years ending in the late 90's. I don't think anything has changed in that regard. As long as the customer has valid ID we had to cash the check. There are of course situations involving potential fraud, etc. that would lead us to investigate the item in more detail which could take some time but we could not charge to cash an on us item.

This is out-dated. For non-account holders they can and do charge a nominal fee. I cashed a Chexx Inc check at US bank for a $5 fee

Are all Chexx checks drawn from US Bank? If not, what bank are the Stars checks being written from?

PokerStars check trip report:

After getting my money out of Neteller around noon on Monday, I requested a check sometime later in the evening. The Fedex envelope was here today, and I hadn't even received my tracking number, so I checked my e-mail. Sure enough, Stars had sent me the number sometime between 2 AM and when I woke up at 1 PM today. Package was sent out yesterday and arrived today (FAST!).

Went to my bank (local), and approached a teller who I know thinks I'm cute. She was in a bad mood today, and wasn't as courteous as usual. I had deposited checks from Stars at this bank twice before with no problems. This time was no exception. Will check bank account over the next couple of days to make sure it went through OK.

Brought my check to US Bank...no problem cashing it, just a $5 charge. DL and a thumbpring is all they needed.

I deposited one of these in an ATM last night. Usually they show up as cleared for me next business day, but this one hasn't. Anyone know if that's because I used the ATM instead of a teller, or if these checks just take longer to clear?

When I have deposited checks at the ATM they often dont show up on my online account as even pending for a day or two. It just depends when the bank gets around to entering them into the system.
