Re: why hockey is dumb
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] Still waiting for you to explain those 'better' systems. b [/ QUOTE ] It is so stupid that this discussion is happening in a hockey thread but whatever. Better systems: 1) leave games as a tie. Unless the game is a playoff game, there is no need for overtime at all. 2) Play a full extra period (of whatever length). Ideally, play two extra periods of some length with each team getting to kick off to start one. If after this the game is still tied, do it again. 3) Have the teams bid worse field position against each other. For example Team A: we'll tkae the ball on our own 20 yard line Team B: we'll tkae the ball on our own 17 yard line Team A: we'll tkae the ball on our own 12 yard line Team B: take the ball. Overtime would then start with Team A having the ball on their own 12 yard line. From there, they would play sudden death (If team A goes 3 and out, they have to punt, and team B gets good field position. Team A could drive down the field and win on the first possesion, but they would have to do so from poor field position, and Team B would have had the opportunity to take the ball first). 4) Play the first team to 4 points wins. 5) Play the arena format where if a team scores on their first possesion, the other team gets one possesion to score. after that, sudden death. Any of these would be better than the current NFL format ,and MUCH better than the college format. [/ QUOTE ] 1) Red herring. 2) I would like better than the current NFL OT. 3) Ridiculous. Both teams should be gauranteed a shot of offense. 4) Could work. Except it still lacks both teams being on offense. 5) Is pretty much what college is, just without the kickoff. I still like the college format better. The NFL format sucks. b |

There is nothing wrong with tie games, and given the difficulty of formating a football overtime, I think this is something that should be considered. I have to disagree that 5 is what college is. With the arena format, field position and punting are still part of the game. The thing that I dislike maost about the college system is that Field position plays no part of it. I actually listed those 5 in order of my prefrence. |

Btw...You do realize Arena football is a 50 yard field, right? Anyways, any system that doesn't gaurantee both opponents equal opportunity sucks. b |

Re: why hockey is dumb
With the introduction of some of these new rules, I'm surprised the NHL has yet to adopt the no touch icing rule, a la international play.
The chance for exciting races for the puck isn't great enough to negate the likelihood of a bad injury, or at least a scary collison with the boards/glass. edit: At least Grapes is right on one thing. |

Please tell me how a team can win the field possesion battle in college overtime (even if they move the ball back). And yes I realize the arena field is 50 yards. I don't see why that means their overtime won't work for the outdoor game. |

[/ QUOTE ] Love it. Let the team lawyers w/secretaries negotiate at midfield right before kickoff. This would lengthen the game considerably and allow further beer consumption and more exciting prop bets... |
