[ QUOTE ]
All, Just for a humorous comparison, the average salary of Goldman Sachs's 22,000 employees last year was over $500k. The top 250 Goldman employees averaged about $7M each. Sorta sick how little money there really is in poker. [/ QUOTE ] there is alot of money in poker in comparison to what the average american makes. of course their isnt alot of money in poker in comparison to the upper echelon of the business(or sports) world. despite how intelligent we like to consider ourselves, most people on here arent going to be high on the corporate ladder at a prominent company any more than they are going to make 500k/yr at online poker |

I actually made 300k in a year playing 15-30 on Party years ago. Not sure how feasible that sort of thing is these days though, because game are tougher and also far less plentiful. Back then there were like 35 full games at peak times and maybe 10-12 at the very worst times. [/ QUOTE ] yeah seriously wtf? where'd all the moneys go |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] The more I think about it, I'd probably bet the under on 200 as long as we are talking about a span of a couple of years. There are a lot of people who have made 500k+ in one year, it's just hard to do it for 2-3+ years [/ QUOTE ] The number of people who have made over $500k per year for 3 years? I would set the line at perhaps 25, and I think that might be too high. I think you guys are badly over estimating how many people win a lot of money at this game, even Taylor who is presumably one of those 25. [/ QUOTE ] Add my vote to Sciolist's. [/ QUOTE ] Seconded. These threads are always funny because they show how out of touch some are. |

Sorta sick how little money there really is in poker. [/ QUOTE ] As the article mentions, this is a mean rather than a median, i.e. most people in Goldman's get paid a lot less than this. Still pretty amazing though. The reason why there's not a lot of money in poker is because - well, all you're doing is playing poker. People with real jobs do something useful with economic value added. Most of the guys who are smart enough to kill high stakes poker games could make more as securities traders. Slightly different work ethic / lifestyle though. [/ QUOTE ] fund managers and traders don't really add economic value either, they are just in a better racket. [/ QUOTE ] I'd disagree - I think the choices that fund managers make are vital in the capital allocation process of an economy. If you didn't have fund managers, well for a start pensioners and anyone who buys insurance would be worse off (pension payments would be lower, premiums higher). But fundamentally the wrong businesses would be receiving investors' money, and not eventually invested in the most +EVA (economic value added) projects. As you mention in your next post, investing isn't zero-sum, because the economy grows. And it grows faster when investments are made in the right places, as decided by the fund managers, so a lot of value is added. It's not so obvious with traders, but they do provide liquidity which is an essential intangible. |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] The thing is, if you can make 500k a year in poker, you probably can also get around the same salary at a big firm (since those players who make that much aren't stupid you know) so why try it by playing poker while you can a lot more security at this big firm... I think the only people who think it's worth making loads of money in poker are gifted students who don't have any other opportunity to make this kind of money anywhere else while they are still in college... [/ QUOTE ] I think the key point here is corporate world vs da underground. Not everyone can be happy in the corporate world. Some people even go temporarily insane in that environment. even cbnz will make 500 this year and hes the biggest nit int he world [/ QUOTE ] Too bad you are both pussies and never give action to anyone. Only reason you are making that much money is because of how soft the games were. You should prolly invest all your moneys now and and retire from poker. |

the comparison to some corporate employee is ridiculous, especially in the propaganda style way ElD presented it.
