He's smart for sitting this out.
The HR Derby completely f-ed up David Wright's swing in the second half. He became super homerun swing pull happy for like 2 months afterwards.

It is more likely David Wright ran hot in the first half and ran badly in the second half. Especially since they aren't true halfs, but rather 60% of the season 40% of the season. Edit: 87 games pre ASB 67 games post.

how come everyone wants to try and give ruth all of the conditions that would make him a worse player (better competion etc.) but none that would make him a better player( even forgetting steroids if he worked out legitimately he surely would have improved as a player)
Even if Bonds is better than Ruth, Ruth still had a much bigger impact on the game than Bonds. Ruth changed the way the whole league played games, Bonds changed the way people pitch to him and not the whole league.

One additional thing ... if we are going to say that Bonds is "better" than Ruth, then why do we stop with Bonds? Certainly, steroids aside, Bonds is a great player, one of the all-time best. But what about Sammy Sosa in his prime? Or A-Rod? Griffey Jr. in his non-injured prime? Are these guys also better than Ruth? What about Willie Mays? Was he better than Ruth?

We are talking about which is better, not more influential. It is a lot easier to be influential when you get in on the ground floor...
Also, I don't think you can count Ruth's laziness as a plus. Bonds, steroids or no, has great work ethic. Ruth just ate a lot.
