Save Room - John Legend

Agree with this.

Hello It's Me - Todd Rundgren
Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith
Daniel - Elton John

Think these 4 songs have a timeless quality - also lots of people seem to like them regardless of what they usually listen to.

I don't believe that the tunes that eventually come to be viewed as defining a genre, or transcending it are necessarily the ones that instantly appeal or strike one. Indeed it is one of the great things of the album as an idea, and potentially one of the concerns of the itunes phenomenon, that in listening to albums over, the catchy tunes that sold the album may fade, but other tracks blossom.

I think that's the big confusion at the heart of this thread. A lot of the tunes mentioned are undeniably great tracks but, whilst I think Billy Jean is a great tune, I have absolutely zero idea whether it was immediately obvious to me the first time I heard it that it was superior to others of its ilk, let alone what people thought of it when it first came out.

Moreover, there are some tunes that are insta-smashes that seem to be utterly unique at first, but I tire of eventually (REM, losing my religion) and others which I don't initially love, but I come to rate much much higher (Natalie Merchant, River).

One tune I recently heard again for the first time in a long time and still loved was All Together Now by the Farm

Will the Circle Be Unbroken by the Carter Family is the one track in my i-pod i never would have expected to be mentioned on 2+2...

couple thoughts while reading through this whole thread, a lot of songs i see are good, even great songs, but hardly instant classics that transcends. this just seems like a list of good songs or personal favorites.
not everybody likes guys yelling over guitars (nirvana - nevermind). i love that song but my parents certainly don't. i think new york state of mind by nas is one of the best rap songs ever but anybody who doesn't like rap certainly won't like rap because of it.

hey ya is a good choice because it seems like everybody loves it, though as a "hip-hop" song itself i can think of a lot better songs, but those songs don't transcend its genre.

also i don't know a single person that doesn't like hotel calfornia.

a lot of old school soul/r&b-ish type songs could/should make this list because everybody can appreciate great voices and melodies, while not everybody can get into a guitar rifts or synthesizers or whatever.

on that note i nominate

etta james - at last

otis redding - sitting at the dock of the bay

louis armstrong - what a wonderful world

CDC - I sincerely hope the guy who didn't like "Hotel California" beat the crap out of the guy who likes it.

Also - The Eagles are, I always thought, one of the standard "god I hate them cause they are overplayed and bad" bands.
