Somewhat amusing parody which covers my main gripes with it, the crappy convenient plot devices etc. That said I did enjoy it a lot in parts, and the battle of Hogwarts in particular should look awesome on screen if done well.

Yeah, this whole thing was pretty funny...

"Then Voldemort's voice echoes through the night.

Voldemort: Brave fighters of Hogwarts, I do not wish to spill blood that doesn't need to. Therefore I shall withdraw my Death Eaters for one hour. Potter, if you don't want more of your friends to die, I suggest you come out and face. I'll be in the Forbidden Forest.... No Lucius, I told you a Big Mac, hold the pickles. Does this look like they held the pickles? I don't care what the clerk says, they can damn well hold the bloody pickles! Pick them off? No, their juice will still be on the burger, mixed into the special sauce. Just go back and tell them to get the order right this time. What Yaxley? Still on? Oh. You have one hour, Potter! That is all."

Here's something that really bothers me. Dobby could apparate and bring wizards with him, even where wizards couldn't normally apparate. So the whole Draco sneaking people into Hogwarts in HBP, or Regulus dying after stealing the locket, or any other "oh no we can't apparate how are we going to solve this!" situation throughout the books makes no sense at all now.

Am I missing something?

Nope. It's already been said, it's a fairly large plothole that house elfs can do all sorts of magic, and yet they're not being used by wizards

The series is full of these types of holes. Time Turner anyone?

And where did remote talking Patronus charms come from? Wouldn't those have been useful someplace else?

On the whole, though, she's been very good about consistency. What look like throw away details in early books come back to be of importance, and later actions are consistent with earlier details.

I think they had talking patronuses before in OOP or HBP...but she is definitely very good at sticking in little details, and making them important later on. That's one of the best things about the entire series, and what makes it so enjoyable to reread the books.

Guys, I think that you are missing a key theme.
yes, houselfs can do incredible magic and the wizards do not use this to their advantage, but JK has established this. Wizards are cruel to the elfs and do not respect them. they ignore them and mistreat them. The fact that the wizrds do not use them, especially voldemort is an ongoing theme.
How is voldemort brought down? By his inability to love, mistreatment of others, etc. Overlooking the power of the houselfs is a flaw of his, but since harry is kind to others he is rewarded.
It is not really a plothole, but a theme.

We understand it's a theme, that doesn't mean it makes sense.

The smartest wizard in the world would know to use house elf magic for their own benefit

What doesnt make sense then? Elfs have great power, but are considered unworthy or lesser creatures by wizards so they are overlooked and underused and unless one takes the time to talk to one probably dont realize their power.

I think rats are below me, but if I knew a rat could teleport me to a bank vault, I'd probably take advantage of that
