That also ties in with the mirror image of that idea, that people who have kids are necessarily mature and endowed with superior wisdom, and not just regarding kids. I've seen people playing the kid "card" more than once, claiming they were simply wiser and more evolved than others due to that alone. [/ QUOTE ] The funny thing is they're right in a twisted way. Having children, on average, causes a significant increase on scores for Right Wing Authoritarianism (RWA) (and before I get flamed, RWA has nothing to do with right vs left politically.) High scores for RWA are associated with gullibility, conventionality (in the sense of thinking everyone ought to be the same), prejudice, hostility towards out-groups, inability to reason logically, dogmatism, self-righteousness, unconditional trust of authority and various other unpleasant characteristics. So having kids really does change you, just not necessarily for the better. |

Fish reproduce because they have to(male fertilizes eggs left on ocean floor), we do it because we want to(penis+vagina=pleasure for both parties). If mammals were expressed designed just to reproduce we wouldn't need the incentive of pleasure.

Anecdotally, that describes a lot of what I am seeing amongst my friends who just made babies. |

[/ QUOTE ] There are very few mammals who have sex for pleasure - I believe the list consists of some apes, bonobos, dolphins, and that's that. If humans didn't have this incentive, we'd not reproduce at all, because having the brain is more of a curse in this regard. Too many things other than reproducing going on. |

[/ QUOTE ] There is a book on the subject of RWA from the top researcher on authoritarianism, and it's downloadable here: http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~altemey/ Page 68/69 for info on the effects of parenthood. I really recommend reading the book, it's eye-opening in a lot of ways. |

That's not a biological imperative, then. Real biological imperatives are what flies do to reproduce, or the assorted insects who automatically die in childbirth. Sex would have to feel really goddamn good to make that tradeoff.
As kutuz_off says, the smarter the beast, the more pleasure is required to incentivize us into breeding. Also, you know when you say [censored] like "Same with racial minorities who presume themselves to be experts on racism and race relations." you sound like someone deserving of a racism ban plz, right? |

[/ QUOTE ] How so? Racial minorities aren't automatically experts on race relations. Some are, some aren't. How is saying that racist? Seems like it's more racist to say that minorities are automatically more knowledgeable about such things. |

"How is saying that racist?"
Actually, never mind, end the racialism tangent. To the biological point, we need emotions to breed. Spiders don't. We aren't pure reproducing machines. |
