can we all just take a second, and appreciate the NL most valuable player, matt holliday, and his ability to beat the throw and tag home plate safe? [/ QUOTE ] No, we cannot do that sorry. The bases loaded <2 outs thing horrifies me from a fan's perspective. Memories of Kenny Rogers vs. Atlanta in 1999. You get down 2-0 to a batter and it's hard to not think about walking in the winning run. It would be kinda LOL if a batter leaned into one a la Don Baylor, or Homer Simpson in that one episode. This almost happened in that epic 1986 ALCS game 5, Red Sox-Angels. An obscure reliever named Steve Crawford got down 2-0 with the bases juiced and one out in the ninth. The ump called the next one on the corner, could easily have gone the other way, and he managed to get out of the inning, and the Sox went on to win the series. Had Crawford walked that guy Donnie Moore would probably still be alive. |

I wouldn't have walked the bases full either. Too many bad things can happen. Walking Helton for "Defensive Replacement" was a good call, even though it didn't work out.

[ QUOTE ] 1st and 3rd no outs is a completely different situation than the bases loaded no outs when you absolutely cannot let one run score. You can't go for the DP because the runner on third comes home. It's better to load up the bases to AT LEAST get the force at home if not the X-2-3 double play. [/ QUOTE ] if I remember ev right it was .894 for bl and .9 for 1 and 3rd, but the difference between carroll and helton probably makes that enough to not walk him. [/ QUOTE ] By EV do you mean Run Expectancy or Win Expectancy? Because, the real numbers we should be looking at our the % of times a team scores 1 run in each situation (or how often the defensive team allows zero runs) as anything past 1 is meaningless. |

He clearly did not touch home and should have been out, after he was tagged.
The ump was stupid in giving hte slow safe call and the catcher was stupid for slowly tagging him after he picked up the ball. Regardless, the Rockies got hosed on the earlier HR call and clearly should have won the game anyway, so it's all a moo point. The game was mind bottling though. |

If you combine defensive and offensive values, Wright is the MVP and it's not particularly close. |

I'd hate for instant replay to come in to play. The human element is what makes this game far more fascinating than any other. [/ QUOTE ] Baseball already uses Questec, and even worse, it's used arbitrarily in some stadiums, and not in others. |
