Hell ya! I could see Cardo on Jeopardy!

Trebec: And your Final Jeopardy category is the Aubrey-Maturin series

Cardo: I bet it all! Ship it!

Ana - my buddy just won ~$500k on "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader". I think you should do that. If that doesn't work out, grad school ftw?

Just skimmed the thread so maybe this was brought up, but how are you not in grad school? Not law school, which I think I remember you said you hated, but some Phd program or something. That seems like the place for you, plenty of misanthropic soul-searching intellectual types for you to chill with.

Well, speaking only in history, my interest in grad school ended at my first introductory meeting on the subject, in which one of my TAs (cool cool guy btw) told me in no uncertain terms what I was expected to be interested in, who I was expected to be influenced by, who I was supposed to mention in my personal statement, etc. etc. etc. LOLz. What a racket! I would have to switch academic disciplines entirely to go back to school, and it's not like anything else is reaching out and grabbing me.

Ana - my brother's in grad school for literature (Phd program), he likes it alot, but what you're saying is not too far off from what he's told me. Seems to be a very elitist world with proscribed parameters of thinking, and not a lot of room for creativity. I can see how that would turn you off from grad school.

If you can stand it (I couldn't) you could always tutor SATs or something at a good hourly rate.

mebbe you are not nearly as smart as you think you are? or wish you were?

that seems to be the case with most people i know who exhibit similar traits and attitude.

maybe get that in check, it can be pretty humbling. (personal experience)

Let's say you were to devise a test or standard for this. What would it be and how would it work?

No, he's right. The upper echelons of mediocrity can see that they're mediocre. You're not there, and given your posting history, your ability to get there is minimal.

Maybe he's just sick of how you reject everyone's advice out of hand, as though you are too special to participate in the human experience.
