I would think anybody who knows about the whole Vick trade with Tomlinson is probably going to be enough of a sports fan to at least be familiar with Beckham's European history. Again, if we're talking Texas or the deep South, I could be wrong.

[/ QUOTE ]
I am from the Northeast and enjoy soccer more than the average American, but I couldn't tell you anything about Beckham's stats, titles, or other accomplishments. I had to look up on wikipedia to make sure I was correct about the last two European clubs he's played for, and I'd be surprised if even 20% of the football fans you are referring to could name them.

Alex: Agreed, I think many people in the US know David Beckham and know he is a soccer "star." They may not know why he is or what he is done, but I guarntee you if you ask Americans to name a current soccer player almost all of them will say Beckham.

This is not a poll of the general public: Beckham would clearly win that based on name recognition.

It is a poll of American sports fans asking who is more "Now", whatever that means.

Most American sports fans could tell you the following about Beckham's sports career: he plays soccer.

They couldn't tell you what team(s) he plays for, or what significant titles he's won or records he holds.

American sports might not recognize Tomlinson's face, but they know what team he plays for and what his sports accomplishments are. Plus, he is in his prime, and Beckham is over-the-hill. How can you say someone is "Now" when they are essentially coming to America to semi-retire?

If this were a poll of celebrity, Beckham is the right choice. But if it were, Paris Hilton should be the #1 seed.
For what this is actually a poll of, Tomlinson deserved to win easily.

Here you admit you don't know what it means. Then say Tomlinson deserves to win easily...despite not knowing what it means. Let me help:

[ QUOTE ]
Throughout July, "SportsCenter" will air "Who's Now," a daily series in which viewers will help ESPN determine the ultimate sports star by considering both on-field success and off-field buzz.

[/ QUOTE ]

No one's off-field buzz is bigger than DB at the moment I'd guess. Certainly LT's isn't even close (since the season ended have you heard ANYTHING about LT). Even during his record breaking season it was fairly quiet...just because he's such a humble guy. I love LT to death, but if your talking about Ultimate Superstar given ESPN's words DB is it in this matchup.
