I would agree even if "Moonage Daydream" were the only song I'd ever heard.

I'd also throw in Ed Wynne from Ozric Tentacles: Ozric Live. Joe Satriani once named Wynne as a major influence on his playing. I like Wynne much better.

And Dave Navarro from Jane's Addiction. Every guitar player out of the 80's LA scene names Navarro as an influence. My personal favorite.

What is so great about Eric Clapton? Which great songs that he has recorded did he also write?

I believe you're looking for the Best Songwriters of All Time thread. This is the Best Guitar Players of All Time thread.

Right, in which Cobain could definitely make an appearance, but to include him in this list is absurd.

wrong. wronger than wrong. i saw a million shows living in portland and driving to seattle during the 80's/90's. to tell you the truth i never really "noticed" guitarists, from eddy, to slash to richards to dr. know to hammet i saw and enjoyed them all but cobain was different. he was in a class by himself. the guitar was part of his body, he spoke through it. its hard to explain but you never got the feeling he was "playing" anything, just living through the instrument...guess you had to be there.

How about Pat Metheny? I don't really like him, but he's supposed to be acclaimed no?

I've been playing/studying guitar for virtually my entire life (27). The #1 guitar player of all time (if there is such a thing) is Django Reinhardt .

LOL at John Mayer. In Austin, TX (where he is from) he would get kicked off the stage at any number of SRV-obsessed blues clubs. He is an average (at best) guitar player.

[/ QUOTE ]

John Mayer's biggest problem is he has just really started to showcase his guitar skill in his most recent album. He has stated publicly that he originally made poppy albums to appeal to the mainstream and guarantee his success. But, his most recent two albums and especially the most recent start to show off his guitar chops. Anyone who has seen his recent live stuff, or his work with the John Mayer Trio knows that he is a legitamite guitar player. I have no doubt that he will be mentioned alongside Clapton in 30 years.

Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny, Steve Howe clearly belong to the top 10 imho.

I think its hysterical that in every thread I have ever seen about guitar players its always the classic rock lovers or blues lovers who put people like Yngwie down and talk smack about how guitar players that play metal suck and can only shred and its almost never the metal fan base (who have a lot of aggression) putting down your legends.

Different ears just like different sounds and styles and some people find shredding incredibly hard and some people find the technical bit hard.

I dont if hes been mentioned But Dimebag Darrel was something special and the way he died is one of the biggest tragedies in music history.

Theres so many sick guitarist around. The technical freaks:
John Petrucci
Micheal Angelo
Steve Vai
Malmsteen (I still dont understand how his fat fingers can move that fast)
The guys From DragonForce
Paul gilbert

And theres the guirtarist whose style of play just blows me away every I hear them play.
Jimmy hendrix
Zakk wylde
BB king
Gary More
Steve Vai
Dimebag
Anngus Young
Alexi Laiho
Slash
Randy Rhodes

Plus all the others i cant think of right now.

My personal Favourite is Vai, his technical ability and style never fails to impress me.

Isn't alot of technical playing, shredding?

No offense but alot of 'metal' players tend to only put out a 1 dimensional way of playing(as do some other styles, but I notice it in 'metal' a bit more). Album after album. Technically, many of them are great. They can play all the scales and patterns, very regimented and planned out, but much of it really sounds the same.(especially the solos) Alot of times it sounds like the whole album is one song, interchangeable with their other albums.
