Creative Content != Information. Perhaps if you dwell on this as a possibility you will understand what people are saying to you in this thread.

How about books, kipin? What do you think would happen to books if everything that was published was available to everyone for free?

kipin,

I don't know if this falls under your argument. But I pretty much stopped buying CDs when I bought the latest Foo Fighters CD. I don't own a CD player, but I liked it and respected the band so I gave them my business. It was full of copyright protection and I was unable to put it onto my computer/mp3 player. So there was no point in my buying the CD if they would not let me use the music in the avenue I wanted.

Do you think that relates to your argument in some fashion or another?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes. This is what I am talking about exactly.

Now you as a consumer will seek out other avenues to procure music and most likely you will at some point in time download an illegal mp3.

If the recording execs did more towards understanding the needs and wants of their customers they would be in a lot better shape. Instead they want to force feed us a crippled "technology" that causes lots of headaches for the average consumer who doesn't even understand what DRM is.

An mp3 is definitely information. It's a certain long sequence of 1's and 0's.

Should've included the rest of the "Information that wants to be free" to make that clearer.

I actually agree with Kipin's sentiments, but his ideas are neither new or particularly interesting and I feel he is applying them in ways to justify ripping off participants in a business as currenty constituted.

Format wars are always at the expense of the consumer and the end result will be, as it always has been, a multi-format player or a single format will dominate (this will surely happen with HD vs. Bluray)- either way the years of confusion are ludicrous and cost the consumer both time and money.

However using this period in the lifecycle of a new product as justification for ripping people off is kind of silly to me.

Which version do you use? I use the "Real" version. Do you use the Best Buy version? I've uninstalled and reinstalled it about 5 times and my computer is like 5 times more powerful than the specs required. I would seriously cancel it and switch to something else if Rhapsody didn't kick so much ass (which it does)

edit

and is it still possible to deposit money on allofmp3? I want to buy the mp3 of some records I have because I don't think its fair of the record companies to expect me to buy the same song three goddamn times
