Then I found poker. Poker has been the ultimate hobby. I enjoy playing with my fish friends. I enjoy being a student of the game. It requires math, skill, tactics, has an infinite learning curve, and the 2p2 community is incredible. Of course, poker also has the ultimate bonus of actually making me money. I can dream about buying fun stuff with poker money - like an Xbox 360 to play with the kids, or I can dream a little bigger and think about buying a car. What other enjoyable hobbies can you say that about?

This is really well said and sums up my feelings as well.

I have a fantastic job which offers me complete freedom to do whatever I want, as much intellectual stimulation as I want, and more or less unlimited time off. I would do it if I had to pay to do it. So poker isn't an escape. It's a fun hobby, a really quite fascinating and deeply mathematical game, which is exactly what I like to play. I've played bridge and chess seriously in the past, but poker I find even more interesting than either. The 2p2 community is also great, as poker selects for smart and analytically minded people who have a certain amount of gamble in them. And to boot, I'm being paid a rather ridiculous wage to play. But really I'd be upset with this legislation even if I wasn't making a dime.

You ask an unmarried footballer on his death bed if he wished he could've "worked" more, I bet you he would say yes

[/ QUOTE ]

Ill bet he says I wish I worked harder at making a family

Problem is, there's nobody there with him to ask the question in the first place.

BukNaked,

If you swap engineering grad student for engineer and take away the two kids, your post completely sums up my feelings about all this. In my extremely limited thought about it, I'm having a hard time coming up with a new hobby that involves a blend of traits similar to those of poker. I think I'm just gonna lay low for a week or two and see how things shake out. Maybe I'll just move over to FTP or something, or maybe I'll just put poker on the backburner for now. Regardless, I'm sure all of us will figure out a good solution. And even though I'm not as much a part of it as I'd like to be, I sure hope the community here doesn't fall apart because of this.
