I am going to wait until I get back into the USA next week, get out the SLR film Nikon, play with it for awhile and see what I like/dislike, and then make a choice.

What books do you recommend on photography?

I dont really see the difference between a really expensive body and a cheap body in terms of picture quality. For a 5'7 photo, will you see a big difference? I am leaning towards going with the cheap N50 body, and getting a more expensive lens. I am also going to see if my current Nikon lens will be useable on a digital camera. Then lens is small. I think it says f1.8 50mm on it or something like that.

I liked
Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure
I liked Bob Krist's Spirit of Place: The Art of the Traveling Photographer
But I was surprised that the
National Geographic Photography Field Guide: Secrets to Making Great Pictures was really excellent from what I remember.
I would probably start with the National Geographic guide and move on from there.

6 megapixels is quite a lot. I have 20x30s that I really like that I made with my D70 that look good to me- that is 6 megapixels. I never made 20x30s from 35mm film. so I can't really compare.

I also was at the National History Museum in DC and they had the Winners of the Nature Photography competitions up, which told you equipment used and it was amazing how well 6 megapixels can be blown up:
For instance
Contest
I remember the Japanese snow monkeys were done with an EOS 20d,which was only 8 megapixels but looked great.

If it's AF, your Nikon lens should work fully on whatever body you buy now.

And D50 is a great camera with extremely good high ISO performance, so they say.

The manual Nikon I have is an FM2. The lens is Nikon Nikkor 50mm 1:1.4. Is this going to be usable with a D50?

I also have a couple of rolls of 35mm film. The box says to develope before September 2004. Should I try to use it anyways?

Thanks.

Usable, but no meter. The film should be ok. The FM2 is a cool camera.

I just want to state that I am revising my comments regarding Nikon digital cameras.

For instance the D80 is really pretty good for its price point, and I am now seriously considering it instead of the Canon XTi.

The Canon still has better imaging in a number of ways, but the Nikon has a number of useful features that are attractive as well.

Nikon's use of a Sony imager was a good step IMO - allowing Nikon to concentrate on the technology they were always best at.
