Re: Weird spot with friend and possible jailtime
[ QUOTE ]
how are people supposed to come up with $6k without asking friends/family? [/ QUOTE ] I guess I should have said that I assumed OP's friend lives in America, since he said CVS. Uh... work 80+ hrs/week? |

Re: Weird spot with friend and possible jailtime
i guess i'm in the minority in that I'd definitely lend a good friend the money and possibly-probably lend an ok friend the money if the cash was the only thing preventing him from going to jail. That said, the fact that the guy didn't talk to you himself is pretty weak and probably indicates that you are more acquaintances than friends at all.
I don't think this is any sort of scam b/c I've known people who got put in this spot. And I also think that the intermediary friend is only being minorly douchebaggy. There should be consequences for actions, etc, etc, but I'm guessing this is a fairly young kid, criminal records are really far reaching, and I'm a pretty firm believer in giving people second chances. |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Is it worth $6000 to you to never see these friends again? [/ QUOTE ] Why would OP want/need friends like this? Also, it is pretty shady by your friend to ask you to lend the guy 6k when you are not even friends with him. Dont do it imo [/ QUOTE ] I'm not sure you understood my post. [/ QUOTE ] Ohh, now I see what you did there. |

Re: Weird spot with friend and possible jailtime
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] stealing 6k from a CVS like store does not make someone a scumbag. [/ QUOTE ] We have different definitions of scumbag. [/ QUOTE ] If he stole from family or friends or something, then yeah, I'd say he's definately a total scumbag. But stealing from strangers/some company is much different. If you get your money/property stolen by stangers, it's your own fault for not protecting it properly. I assume typical random people would rob me blind if I gave them the opportunity to do so. I can't condemn a person for acting how I expect people to act. |

Re: Weird spot with friend and possible jailtime
Lend him the money. Maybe you'll need a kidney and the good will you've perpetuated will come around to help you. It can't hurt. Having him harden in jail won't make the world any better a place. If you can part with it, I say do it.

Re: Weird spot with friend and possible jailtime
If you lend him the money, you are encouraging moral hazard. So in the long run, you are doing him, and the world, a disservice. For you guys who don't know what moral hazard is:
