Yesterday's cult is today's religion is tomorrow's mythology.

From many peoples point of view, the only thing that seperates a cult from a relgion, is some time, and a good number of followers. And the only thing that seperates a religion from a mythology is the extinction of the people that believe it.

I mean... if you went to someone who has never heard of Christianity or Scientology, and asked "what makes more sense... aliens came here millions of years ago and created life, or 2000 years ago a guy vanished into thin air?" they are going to think both are pretty insane.

Joker was just observing that for some odd reason, people find it rude to say one sounds insane but not the other. His comment was very much at home within this thread.

If you are comparing a religion that is based on historical figures, that most historians and scientists say existed, to that of a religion based on aliens, and a nuclear war, I dont think you should be allowed to post anymore in this thread.

I tried to bring this up when I brought up the ancient Egyptians, but I was sort of stepping on egg shells because I didn't want to use the word hypocrite. You made the point much more blunt and clear (thanks). Anyway, I agree with you.

Scientology has some pretty wacky beliefs, but are they really more wacky than believing that there is an all-powerful being that gives no proof of his existance, yet judges everyone's actions and determines whether they enter Heaven or Hell?

Some faiths believe in the afterlife. Some faiths believe in reincarnation. Some faiths believe in eternal damnation. Others believe in Nirvana, or being with 72 virgins. There are a lot of wacky beliefs out there - let's not just rag on scientology.*

Obviously you are just using Scientology as a rhetorical device to bash Xtians, but you should be careful that you don't end up looking the fool. You have to be pretty dumb to actually believe that the difference between Xenu and Christ is merely the social respectability of the latter.
