so PJ if I understand you correctly you think Falwell is a scumbag not because he didn't like homosexuals and abortion, but because he thought he was morally superior to homosexuals and abortion lovers?

[/ QUOTE ]

To an extent, yes -- but also his hatred for homosexuals, liberals, and pretty much anyone who disagreed with him went beyond just feeling superior to them. He actively sought to harm them in every way he could, which is pretty despicable.

[/ QUOTE ]

Don't forget the Athiests, Jews, Pagans and career women.

How evil does someone need to be before it is acceptable to celebrate his death?

[/ QUOTE ]
I'd say more evil than Cheney, but less evil than the VT shooter.

[/ QUOTE ]

So if someone is more evil than the VT shooter, I'm not allowed to celebrate his death? That hardly seems reasonable.

[/ QUOTE ]
No, I'm just saying where the line is. Wishing death on super evil people is fine.

Specifically, you're happy that a social conservative has died.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think saying that hating Jerry Fallwell = hating social conservatism does a HUGE disservice to social conservatism, and I say that as a bleeding-heart liberal.

stabn is right

comparing Graham to Falwell is completely unfair.

[/ QUOTE ]

My guess is that he is confusing Graham with Pat Robertson, or perhaps Oral Roberts. They all kind of blend together after awhile.

[ QUOTE ]
The difference between Falwell & those two is bin laden & kim jong il are personall responsible for thousands of deaths.

[/ QUOTE ]

How about this? Falwell and the religious right's efforts to block stem-cell research directly led to the continued suffering and death of thousands.

[ QUOTE ]

Falwell has very unpopular and (IMO) immoral viewpoints, that he broadcasts nationally. But, the fact is, the people that agree with him now already agreed with him when he started. Otherwise, they'd have reacted to him the same with we do.

[/ QUOTE ]

Whether people already agreed with him or not, he was a galvanizing force for the persecution of homosexuals and minorities.

"
I'll say it: w/o Falwell's influence, George W. Bush is never elected President"

This is giving one man far too much credit for the lunacy of hundreds of thousands.

[/ QUOTE ]

but most of them aren't lunatics. they're just easily swayed.

Falwell helped establish the idea that Christians should vote Republican.

[/ QUOTE ]

Non-catholic Christians have always voted conservatively, from the Temperance Movement through the civil rights movement.

After the civil war, Lincoln, the Republican, was hated by the South. The South was a reliable Democratic block. The turn of the South to Republicanism was the biggest change in American politics for more than a hundred years. Falwell was instrumental in making that happen.
