That's not the point. Even if Scurry is equal to the challenge (or somehow better) you're telling the rest of the team "I'm very worried about this game" and putting everyone on edge.

An own goal is almost predictable at that point.

I agree with your sentiments. Her benching is definitely warranted, but so was her reaction IMO.

I'd say she's not a massive liability.

Analyst always pull numbers like this out, and to be honest, I don't agree with this approach. As if somehow the historical stats show that the US is a big favorite in this game. I don't buy it. Brazil has the FIFA world player of the year, but since we've never lost to them, that we are guaranteed to beat them this time.

She shut out Brazil earlier THIS YEAR.

Putting her in was hardly the end of the world.

They had two days to think about it, and it certainly looked like it had an impact on them.

Even if you don't think it had an effect on the U.S., what about Brazil? Doesn't it build their confidence to know they chased a keeper before the opening whistle?

That World Cup was 8 years ago, right? It doesn't seem like the most relevant piece of information to talking about her likely current performance.

I agree with you that switching the keepers probably had no substantial effect on the likely outcome (though it is still a mystifying move). I don't see how that's relevant to what one thinks about Solo's comments afterward. I tend to think it's silly to bench her for complaining about a coaching decision; do you think that the benching should be decided on how correct she was?

Then why bench Solo for "calling out" Scurry? After all, if they aren't mentally weak, shouldn't Scurry understand that this was just anger from a fellow serious competitor?

Hope Solo may have been right, but being right isn't enough of a reason to say what she said. In team sports, you don't publicly disparage teammates, the end.

Ryan was wrong and Solo was wrong, they are not mutually exclusive. Tons of Solo supporters don't seem to get that this is possible.

In most walks of life, being right is its own justification, you can say it with virtual impunity. But team sports is different. I wouldn't be thrilled about being on a team with anybody who would call out Scurry in public like Solo did. Take care of it behind closed doors; she should have learned this in junior high.

Yes Solo got screwed, by most of our standards she had "earned" the spot, Ryan's coaching decision was imo incredibly boneheaded. But nevertheless Solo comes off as the biggest loser of all here. I'm glad she didn't dress for the Norway game.
